This field trip at Hamama falls was easily one of, if not the best field trips Iʻve ever been on. My favorite part was the water tunnel, when we got to experience the cold water dripping out of the cave and even got to collect the wai with our flasks. It was a really chicken skin moment when we were chanting in the pitch black during the water tunnel trip. As for the waterfall, Iʻve never seen something quite like it up close before. We got a lot of pictures together with Palikuʻs DSLR camera, and had a lot of fun with our little photoshoots. From this trip I learned a lot more about the meaning of wai, how precious it is, and one of the main ways that Hawaiʻi getʻs itʻs water resources. I also learned that the water tunnel has the best tasting water ever.

Iʻve never heard of Hamama falls before, but after looking at the pictures I know Iʻve seen it before, I just never knew where it was. Iʻm really excited about this field trip not only because of the waterfall, but the water tunnel as well. Iʻve never experienced something like that and would love to gain that experience into my life. Other than the fact that itʻs in Waiheʻe, a fact that I just learned, I know pretty much nothing about this place, so Iʻm excited to see what this new setting can teach meThe wai that is closest to me is a spot called icy ponds. I am not sure what the real name of the stream is. The stream starts all the way up from the peak of Mt. Kaʻala and makes itʻs way near a road paved by the Board of Water Supply. One story I recall from my childhood was that a great chief once swam in the icy ponds whenever she had the chance. This stream is linked to the near heiau, Kaneakī heiau. Iʻm not sure of itʻs significance other than at one point the heiau was for agricultural purposes. Today the river usually doesnʻt flow a lot, unless it has been raining constantly. Board of Water Supply usually drains a lot of the water out of the river, but when it rains, the roads can become flooded at times because the stream and the road cross at about two different points. |
